Edward Preston Shoulder Plane 1368
The number 1368 Preston shoulder rebate plane is another of the iconic
Edward Preston planes with decorative detailing on the sides of the plane
incorporating the EP two cherries Edward Preston logo.
This shoulder plane was Nickel plated with a shouldered, full-width cutter which
is secured by a shaped lever cap by means of the securing screw (shown in the photo
on the underside of the lever cap). The blade
is set at a low angle which can be accurately adjusted using the screw adjuster.
The design of this plane was so good it has left a long legacy which is still going
strong today.
From the early 1930's a new range of shoulder planes were produced by the maker
Record. The range of Record shoulder planes were based heavily on the Preston 1368
shoulder plane. These Record planes were the models:
041,
042,
072,
073,
and
074.
These models one-by-one were phased out throughout the 20th century up until the
073 ceased being produced in the 1990's. Next came the Clifton shoulder planes.
These Clifton planes were the models: 410, and 420. The 410 design has decorative
detailing on the sides of the plane and incorporates the two cherries logo.
There were/are other makers who have manufactured shoulder planes similar to the
Preston 1368 model but certainly Record and Clifton are the makers who were/are
the most popular and produced the best quality planes.
This plane was sold in four sizes:
- 5 inch x 5/8 inch
- 8 1/4 inch x 1 inch
- 8 1/4 inch x 1 1/4 inch
- 8 1/4 inch x 1 1/2 inch
The larger sized Preston 1368 planes command the highest prices. As with most old tools; good conditioned, complete, original planes are the most sought after. The value starts to drop rapidly if the plane is not in good condition, is not complete, or if it has replacement parts. Due to their age often you find these planes with some loss of plating.
Plane Use
The Preston 1368 shoulder plane is primarily used for fine and accurate work on shoulders.

- found on either side of the plane.
"E.Preston & Sons, Trade Mark, EP" (EP cherry trade mark) -
this is sometimes located on the front end on a metal plate (see photo).

What To Watch Out For
Chips and nibbles around the mouth, replacement plane blades or little original blade remaining seem to be quite common problems with these planes.
